ARTIST PROFILE

‘The town’ takes on many forms  within the South African photography tradition  but it is for the most part formulated in the documentary style. Within this work I interrogate the  ‘what is seen is what it is’ objective style of documentary work that is so often framed within a place. In a manner similar to what Jeff Wall calls ‘near documentary’, I focus on a small town in 'The Platteland'. A remnant of apartheid, the town consists mainly of disenfranchised and working-class white people living off the fading coal mines. This town is called Raider and it only exists in the exhibition space. I hope to illustrate  photography’s precarious relationship with truth. For truth is not something already there merely to be discovered by a chance observant - rather, truth is created in response to the world and self, which is always in a state of flux
